What Andy Gaus has achieved (and brilliantly achieved) in his new Translation is to current the concepts, phrases and context of the varied books of the New Testomony as they might have been perceived by a majority of educated Greek readers within the third and fourth centuries.

To take however one instance, Gaus rightly factors out that the Greek phrase “hamartia” doesn’t imply “sin” within the sense of a deep separation by human beings from the desire and functions of God. It’s an archery time period that merely means “lacking the mark”.

I believe Gaus misses the mark himself, nevertheless, when he chooses to translate “pneuma” as “breath” slightly than “Spirit”. True, “pneuma” can imply “breath”, however within the Septuagint the phrase is extensively used to explain the Holy Spirit. For instance in Knowledge 9:17, the impressed writer writes: “Who has identified Your counsel except You give Knowledge and ship Your Holy Spirit from above?” Certainly the writer is just not asking for God’s holy “breath” however His Holy Spirit?

Nevertheless, though he retains referring to their “authentic Greek”, the principle downside that Gaus makes no try to unravel is that the unique New Testomony texts are not extant. Gaus doesn’t state which of the rival texts he has used, so presumably he has consulted Nestle and the American Bible Society and different editions and arrived at a consensus. He has made no try and right apparent errors by editors and copyists (John 18:40 for instance), not does he clarify what technique, if any, he has utilized to punctuation. (The unique texts haven’t any punctuation no matter).

The result’s actually very readable. Even a bit controversial. However the reader who’s anxious to find what the New testomony authors actually wrote is just not going to seek out out right here. For instance in John 18:18, Gaus writes that the slaves and servants have been standing round a charcoal hearth and “Peter was standing there with them.” Now, that is not what John wrote in any respect. That could be a “correction” made by third and fourth century copyists. In earlier manuscripts, John states that “Peter was loitering round with them.”

Nor does Gaus make any try and fill in phrases which can be explicitly implied. For instance, in John 20:17, Jesus does all however explicitly state to Mary that He had “not but ascended to the Father” as a result of He was ready for her, which He clearly was, since He was anxious that she ship a message for Him!

In all, Gaus has made the New Testomony readable, however in the principle, completely typical.
